About National Privacy Week

About National Privacy Week

National Privacy Week in Nigeria began in 2019 with the introduction of the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) and has since grown into a flagship awareness initiative led by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC). It is aligned with the GLOBAL DATA PRIVACY DAY, which originated from Convention 108 in 1981 and Data Protection Day, officially recognised in 2006. National Privacy Week serves as a platform to educate citizens about the importance of data privacy, promote responsible data handling practices, and empower individuals to take control of their personal information in compliance with Nigeria’s data protection framework.

The week also brings together stakeholders from government, private sector, educational institutions, and civil society to foster collaboration and advance a shared commitment to protecting personal data. By aligning with the global observance, Nigeria demonstrates its dedication to international best practices in data protection while addressing the unique needs and priorities of its citizens.

NDPC’s Role and Commitment

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) coordinates and drives National Privacy Week in line with its mandate to regulate and enforce data protection in Nigeria. Through the initiative, the Commission provides regulatory guidance, fosters stakeholder collaboration, and promotes a strong data protection ecosystem that supports Nigeria’s digital transformation.

National Privacy Week has significantly enhanced public awareness, strengthened organizational compliance, and fostered engagement among stakeholders, helping to build trust in digital services and reinforcing Nigeria’s position in the global digital economy. The NDPC remains committed to safeguarding personal data and promoting a culture of privacy, with National Privacy Week serving as a call to action for individuals, organizations, and institutions to uphold data protection principles during the week and beyond.
